Thorlabs' circular, double-density breadboards are constructed from a 1/2" (12.7 mm) thick aluminum plate; this thickness is sufficient to maintain flatness over the full area (see the table to the right for flatness specifications). These nonmagnetic breadboards feature 1/4"-20 (M6) tapped holes at twice the density of our standard hole pattern to provide a convenient platform for assembling prototype optical assemblies, conducting experiments, and mounting small subsystems. Please see the Weights & Dims tab for breadboard diagrams that call out the hole spacings. To reduce reflections, these breadboards are finished with a black anodized coating.

Each breadboard offers four 1/4" (M6) counterbored mounting holes for attaching the breadboard to an optical table, another breadboard, mounting posts, brackets, breadboard feet, or other surfaces and mounts. For example, the photograph at the top of the page shows the MBR6 mounted on our AV2 vibration-absorbing feet.

Thorlabs also offers rectangular double-hole-density optical breadboards, as well as rectangular standard-hole-density breadboards and unanodized, vacuum-compatible breadboards. Custom sizes of these breadboards are also available. Please contact Tech Support for more information.

Do these optical breadboards are suitable for use in ultra-high vacuum conditions?

Thank you for reaching out to us with this inquiry! Generally we only guarantee our unanodized aluminum materials to a vacuum limit of ~10^-6 torr. For products with a black anodization (such as this product), we recommend 10^-3 torr as the max.

Why do you put metric holes (M6) in a breadboard with imperial spacing (1/4in). When I purchased the breadboard (that took 6 weeks to get here) I assumed that with metric holes it would have metric spancing.

Response from Arunthathi @ Thorlabs: Apologies for the issue you have with the item received and the inconvenience this has caused. The holes and spacing in all our breadboards should match (i.e. Metric for Metric and vice-versa) We will contact you directly to send you a replacement asap.
